Read the Tape
Price action, market structure, and confirmation. Learning to see what the market is actually doing.
The Greeks tell you how your contract behaves. They don’t tell you when to put it on.
That’s what the tape is for. A perfect read on gamma is worthless with a bad entry, and a great entry wastes its edge on the wrong strike. Same-day traders need both, and most people spend all their study time on the first one because it’s the part that has formulas attached.
Tape reading is harder to teach because it’s judgment, not arithmetic. But it isn’t mystical either. It’s a set of specific things to look at, in a specific order, with specific rules about what counts as evidence.
The Order of Operations
Most traders learn this backwards. They start with the most granular data — individual prints scrolling past — and drown in noise before they’ve established any context for what they’re seeing. Work outside in instead:
- Structure first. Where is price relative to levels that matter — VWAP, the opening range, prior day’s high and low, and the gamma walls? Structure defines the battlefield before a single trade is placed.
- Volume second. Is there conviction behind the move? A breakout on expanding volume and a breakout on air look identical on a price chart and behave nothing alike.
- Confirmation third. Does the rest of the market agree? A QQQ move that semis and mega-caps refuse to validate is a move with nothing underneath it.
- Order flow last. The individual prints. Genuinely useful, and the layer to learn after the other three are automatic.
Skipping to step four is the single most common way traders waste a year.
The Series
- Reading the Tape: An Introduction to Price Action for 0DTE TradersThe Greeks tell you how your option behaves. The tape tells you what the market is doing right now. Here’s how to start reading price, volume, and order flow for same-day setups.
- Why You Should Never Trade QQQ Without Watching SOXL and MAGSQQQ isn’t one asset — it’s two engines wearing a single ticker. SOXL and MAGS let you see which one is actually running, and whether a breakout has the participation to hold.
- Trading the Opening Range: How to Handle the First HourThe first hour sets the structure for the entire session — and it’s where impatient 0DTE traders do most of their damage. How to define the opening range, when a break is real, and why the gamma regime decides which playbook applies.
Put It to Work Every Morning
Structure is only useful if you know which levels matter today. The Daily GEX Read maps QQQ dealer positioning before every open — gamma flip, call and put walls, directional lean, and hard invalidation lines. Free, in your inbox before the bell.
