Hunt the Day. Own the Trade.
Overnight gave us a real flush and a real recovery. QQQ tagged 717.37 in the globex session, then clawed all the way back to the 725 handle by the time PPI hit the tape. Now we open with dealers sitting on a mountain of positive gamma and a call wall pulling like a tractor beam. This is a compression tape until proven otherwise.
The Regime
Per InsiderFinance, today’s expiration profile is decisively long gamma:
- Net GEX: +$796.3M (call/put ratio 1.78)
- Call GEX: $1.8B on 101,608 OI
- Put GEX: -$1.0B on 176,182 OI
- Total GEX: $2.8B across 277,790 OI
- Intraday ΔGEX: +$4.7B on the session (+592%)
That session delta is the number to sit with. Gamma didn’t drift positive — it got built overnight, and it got built fast. When dealers are this long gamma, they sell into strength and buy into weakness to stay hedged. That mechanically dampens range. Expect moves to stall rather than extend, and expect breakouts to get sold back inside unless something structural gives.
The flip side: 0DTE is only 3.0% of open interest today, weeklies 8.2%, monthlies 16.8%. The gamma wall isn’t dominated by same-day paper, so it’s stickier than a typical Friday pin — but it also means the intraday hedging flow is a bit less frantic.
Levels
- 730.00 — Call Wall / Strong Magnet. Price wants to gravitate here, but this is also the ceiling. Positive gamma means the wall usually holds. Take profit into it; don’t expect through it.
- 727.25 — Session High. First real supply shelf. Reclaim-and-hold is the trigger for the magnet trade.
- 725.50 — Pre-Market High. The pivot. Above it, bulls own the tape. Below it, we’re rotating.
- 724.95 — VAH.
- 724.12 — POC. Gravity in a pin regime. Fades target here.
- 723.18 — VAL. First crack in the floor.
- 722.42 — ZERO GAMMA. This is the line. Above it, dealers dampen. Below it, they amplify. Everything changes here.
- 719.50 — Air pocket. Thin between the flip and the overnight low.
- 717.37 — Overnight Low.
- 716.00 — Put Wall. Volatility expansion trigger. If we’re here, the day has changed character entirely.
Structure & Cross-Asset
On the 1500-tick, QQQ is carrying a bullish 9/21 EMA cloud with the 9 at 724.24 and the 21 at 724.00 — tight, which tells you the cloud is compressed and vulnerable to a flip on any real push. Value is stacked 723.18 / 724.12 / 724.95. Spot opening above VAH is constructive but only marginally.
The confirmation instruments are not cosigning. SOXL is in a bearish cloud below its 143.12 POC. MAGS is in a bearish cloud at 67.71, under POC 67.95 and pressed against VAL 67.66. Market-on-open imbalances show S&P and Dow buy-side but Mag 7 at -30.4M on the sell side. Mega-cap leadership is lagging the index recovery. That divergence is the single most important thing on the board this morning — a QQQ that rallies without semis and mega-cap breadth is a QQQ that’s borrowing strength it hasn’t earned.
VIX at 14.42, down on the day. No fear priced in.
Scenarios
1. The Pin — 55%
QQQ chops 722.40 to 727.25 all session. Opening drive fails in the first 20 minutes, price reverts to the 724.12 POC, and we grind sideways into the auction. This is the base case and it’s what heavy positive gamma is telling you. Trade it by fading the extremes, not the middle.
2. Magnet Pull — 25%
Cooler PPI gives buyers cover, SOXL reclaims 143.03 and MAGS reclaims 67.95, and QQQ takes 727.25 with volume. That opens the door to the 730 call wall. Take profit into 730 — the wall is a target, not a launchpad. Invalidation: failure to hold above 727.25 on the retest.
3. Gamma Flip — 20%
VAL at 723.18 gives way, and price closes below 722.42. Now dealers are short gamma and every seller gets amplified. Target 719.50, then the overnight low at 717.37, then the 716 put wall where the vol signal fires. This is the lowest-probability path but the highest-payout one, because the whole day’s structure has to break for it to happen — and when structure breaks in negative gamma, it breaks fast. Invalidation: reclaim of 723.50.
Economic Calendar
Already printed (8:30 AM ET):
- PPI YoY: 4.7% vs 4.9% est, 5.5% prior — cooler
- PPI MoM: 0.0% vs 0.2% est — cooler
- Core PPI YoY: 4.2% vs 4.1% est, 4.7% prior — marginal miss high, big drop from prior
- Core PPI MoM: 0.2% vs 0.3% est — cooler
- Initial Jobless Claims: 209k vs 202k est, 199k prior — softer labor
- Continued Claims: 1.777M vs 1.794M est
Net read: disinflation on the producer side with labor softening at the margin. That’s a dovish-leaning combination, and it’s part of why the overnight bid held.
Still ahead:
- 1:00 PM ET — 30-Year Bond Auction. High yield and bid-to-cover. This is the real event risk of the session. Yesterday’s 10-year cleared at the highest yield since 2007. A sloppy long-bond auction is the most plausible catalyst for a gamma flip.
Tomorrow (Aug 14): Retail Sales, Core Retail Sales, U. Michigan Sentiment Prelim, U. Michigan inflation expectations, Business Inventories.
The Hunter’s Take
Patience is the edge today. Positive gamma this heavy punishes chasers — the first 15 minutes will manufacture a move that looks like conviction and isn’t. Let the opening auction print, mark the high and the low of the first range, and trade the edges back toward 724.12.
The one thing that would make me flip from fading to trending is the 1:00 PM auction. Until then, 722.42 is the entire day in one number. Above it, sell the highs and buy the lows. Below it, get out of the way and let the flip run.
