Hunt the Day. Own the Trade. QQQ prints $733.71 in the pre-market against a $732.07 prior close, roughly +0.22%. The tape looks calm. The gamma structure underneath it does not.
The Overnight Tape
Retail Sales landed at -0.6% month-over-month against a +0.1% forecast and a +0.2% prior. That is not a rounding error, that is a genuine miss on the consumer. Core Retail Sales was expected at +0.2% after a -0.2% print.
The reaction is the interesting part. /NQ is +63 and /MES is +5.50 into the cash open. Equities are reading a soft consumer as a dovish Fed input rather than a growth scare — the same reflex that has worked all summer. VIX sits at 14.49, down on the day. The 30-year is quoted around 5.21% ahead of a $25B auction, so the bond market is not fully signing off on the dovish interpretation.
Cross-asset: MAGS spiked to 68.94 overnight and has already given most of it back to 68.49, sitting right on its 68.43 value area low. SOXL at 145.36 holds above a bullish 9/21 EMA cloud but is well off its 147.50 profile high. Neither leader is confirming a breakout — they are confirming a fade of the overnight pop.
Gamma Structure
Net GEX for today’s expiration is +$2.4B with a call/put ratio of 2.10. Call GEX is $4.7B on 284,739 open interest; put GEX is -$2.2B on 474,290. More put contracts, less put gamma — the puts are parked further out of the money while the calls are stacked right on top of spot. That is a classic pin-and-cap profile.
Here is the part most reads will miss: session ΔGEX is -$6.0B, or -71.1%. Net gamma has collapsed from roughly $8.4B to $2.4B across two snapshots straddling the retail sales print. Dealers shed the large majority of their long gamma position this morning.
So the regime is technically still positive gamma — mean-reverting, vol-dampening, favorable to premium sellers — but the cushion is a fraction of what it was at the first snapshot. Treat the pin as real early and treat it as suspect after 1:00 PM ET. A positive gamma regime bleeding this fast can flip on a single catalyst, and today has one at 10:00.
Today’s Levels
| Level | Price | What It Is |
|---|---|---|
| Expected Move High | 737.55 | 0DTE IV 23.41%, ±$3.84 |
| Call Wall / Magnet | 735.00 | Strongest signal on the board. Upside cap and gravity point. |
| Profile High | 734.41 | Overnight high |
| Value Area High | 734.13 | Upper value edge |
| Spot | 733.71 | Pre-market |
| VWAP | 733.50 | Session anchor |
| 9 EMA | 732.99 | Short-term trend |
| 21 EMA | 732.63 | Cloud support |
| Point of Control | 732.60 | Fair value. Bull/bear line. |
| Value Area Low | 731.78 | Lower value edge |
| Profile Low | 730.75 | Overnight low |
| Expected Move Low | 729.87 | Sits above zero gamma — note that |
| Zero Gamma | 728.71 | Regime flip. Below here vol expands. |
| Put Wall | 728.00 | Support, then acceleration |
Worth pausing on the bottom of that table. The expected move low (729.87) sits above zero gamma (728.71). The options market is not pricing a regime flip today. If price reaches 729 with conviction, the market is already outside its own pricing — and that is exactly the condition where 0DTE puts pay asymmetrically.
Scenarios
Base Case — Grind and Pin (55%)
Price holds above the 732.60 POC and the 21 EMA, works the 733.50–735.00 pocket, and spends the afternoon getting magnetized to 735. Positive gamma does its job, realized vol comes in under the implied, and premium sellers win. Range roughly 731.78 to 735.60 — meaningfully tighter than the ±3.84 expected move.
Bull Case — Wall Break (20%)
A firm UMich sentiment number or a genuine bid in MAGS/SOXL pushes QQQ through 735 and it holds above 735.60. That forces call-side hedging into thin gamma and 737.55 comes into play fast. The tell is MAGS reclaiming 68.81 and SOXL pressing toward 146.28 — without those, a 735 tag is a fade, not a breakout.
Bear Case — The Trapdoor (25%)
UMich comes in soft on sentiment with inflation expectations sticky at 4.2% one-year, and the market finally trades retail sales as a growth problem instead of a rate-cut gift. Loss of 731.78 opens 730.75, and 728.71 is the line that matters. Below zero gamma, dealers flip to selling into weakness and the move gets legs toward 726 and the 724.04 session low. Lowest-probability path here, and by a wide margin the highest-payoff one.

What I’m Watching
Three things, in order of importance.
One: whether 735 caps or breaks. The magnet signal and the call wall are the same strike, which means 735 is simultaneously where price wants to go and where it should stall. Reaching it is not the trade. What happens on the tag is the trade.
Two: the 10:00 print. Everything before it is positioning noise. With gamma already down 71% on the session, the market has less shock absorber than the headline +$2.4B suggests.
Three: MAGS. An overnight spike to 68.94 fully retraced to the 68.43 value area low is a distribution signature, not an accumulation one. If MAGS loses 68.43 while QQQ is still holding 733, that divergence resolves toward MAGS more often than not.
Friday afternoon in decaying positive gamma is the most overtraded hour of the week. If the 735 test has not resolved cleanly by 1:00 PM ET, the correct position size is smaller, not bigger.
